CECAM Programme Poster 2010

Call for Proposals 2010

Lausanne June 15, 2009

Dear CECAM friend,

With this note we wish to solicit proposals for workshops and tutorials for the 2010 CECAM program.

As in the CECAM tradition, workshops are intended as a forum for the discussion of a specific topic and tutorials for the introduction of PhD students, young researchers and neophytes to learn either fundamental aspects of the simulations-driven approach to science or specific methodologies of wide interest.

We plan to keep the format of the workshops and tutorials that has revealed most successful over more than a decade, namely for a workshop a typical duration of 2-4 days and number of participants between 20 and 50, and for a tutorial a typical duration of 4-5 days and number of participants between 20 and 30. The organizers will be responsible for advertising their initiative, establishing the programme of the event and selecting the participants. Financial assistance will also be at the usual level, namely typically 9,000 EUR for a three-day CECAM workshop.

The organizers will be asked to provide a detailed report on the main findings and conclusions of the workshop or on the outcome of the tutorials, possibly with suggestions for related future activities. This report will be made available online together with the presentations.

We wish to emphasize that CECAM intends to extend the range of interest beyond the traditional ones of particle-based simulations and especially to promote the synergy of mathematical and physical sciences. The topics we would like to consider this year for workshops and tutorials include

  • New Methods for Simulations, Optimization and Analysis
  • Algorithms for Innovative Computing Architectures
  • Computational Biology (includes e.g. Biochemistry, Cellular Modelling, Systems Biology)
  • Computational Chemical Dynamics of Complex Systems
  • Computational Materials Science and Nanoscience
  • Simulations of Soft-Matter and Disordered Systems
  • Computational Plasma Physics
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Simulations of Phase Transitions and Critical Phenomena.

In particular, we encourage outstanding proposals related to energy and environment.

Proposals should be submitted online using the web based procedure on http://www.cecam.org. As for a workshop, the motivation and novelty of the proposal will have to emerge clearly, the state-of-the art of the field should be described exhaustively with emphasis on the open issues on which the discussion is intended to focus and eventually help to make progress. As for a tutorial, clear arguments will have to be presented to motivate the need for it and a complete plan of lectures should be provided. Note that you will also be asked to select online which CECAM organization you wish to manage and support your event, namely either the headquarters or one of the 'aspirant' nodes.

The deadline for workshop proposals is August 19, 2009 (noon CET).
The deadline for tutorial proposals is August 19, 2009 (noon CET).

We ask you to please insert a preliminary text ('motivation and novelty') before July 29, 2009. This will allow us to speed up the refereeing procedure.

The members of the Council of CECAM will evaluate each proposal and decide upon acceptance during their meeting of October 5-6, 2009. Notice will be sent to you within a couple of weeks.

We are looking forward to receiving your proposals
