Kinetic instabilities are often observed in sliding friction. On crystalline
surfaces, nanometer-scale sliding contacts often jump with the periodicity of the
surface lattice. We will discuss various ideas about what is actually jumping how
often and how far, and compare with atomic friction measurements. In a second
part, we will discuss sliding instabilities in friction of micro-structured rubber
surfaces on glass at a larger scale.
