Mainz Materials Simulation Days 2021 - What Precision is Needed to Create Function: Roles of Defects and Disorder in Hierarchical Structure Formation of Soft Matter
Mainz / Online
The Mainz Materials Simulation Days are by now an established series of biennial meetings organized by the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
The topic of the 2021 meeting is "What Precision is Needed to Create Function:
Roles of Defects and Disorder in Hierarchical Structure Formation of Soft Matter". Molecular-level materials design often attempts to increase the accuracy and precision of a material's properties, by minimizing defects or faults in the material structure. However, biological systems are both highly precise and also highly flexible and fault-tolerant. Thus, the question of "How much precision is necessary to achieve function?" lies at the interface between the physics of defects and molecular biology. This interdisiplinary meeting aims to be a platform for integration and discussion of ideas on either side of this interface. While the focus is on the development and employment of theoretical and computational approaches, we also look to experimentalists as a guide for areas where such approaches may be most impactful.
The event will take place Monday, June 7 - Wednesday June 9, 2021, and is tentatively planned to be a hybrid in-person/online event. Of course, the in-person component will depend on the current pandemic restrictions at the time of the event. There will be no conference fee. Schedule and details TBD.
Apart from invited talks there will be several available slots for contributed talks and also a poster session. For registration please apply through the CECAM website and include an abstract for your talk/poster along with your preference, if applicable. We will then inform you about your acceptance.
Deadline for registration and abstract submission has been extended to May 19, 2021!
