19th International Workshop on Computational Physics and Materials Science: Total Energy and Force Methods
Location: CECAM-IT-SISSA-SNS
Organisers
This would be the 19th workshop of a long series that began in 1987 at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. This highly-visible biennial event is one of the most prominent international conferences in electronic structure theory, showcasing new areas and the latest developments in the field. The speakers are typically a mixture of early-career and senior leading scientists worldwide in the electronic structure community working on a broad range of topics ranging from development of theory and methods for complex systems to their applications in physics, chemistry, biology and engineering.
The workshop lasts for 2 whole days and 1 half day. Rather than focusing on one specific topic, this workshop aims at providing a very broad and interdisciplinary forum for scientists working with the latest methods on a wide variety of different topics over multiple disciplines. Several poster sessions are held to allow for the large number of participants (over 200) to share their results. There is and will continue to be strong student and postdoctoral participation; and what makes this activity unique is that it brings together scientists from both developed and developing countries to network and interact and hence build collaborations.
The choice of the topics and lecturers for the workshop is done in consultation with members of the scientific advisory committee, a scientifically-broad group composed of leaders in the field. (See the website of this past year's event, http://indico.ictp.it/event/7948/, for a list of the advisory committee members.) As mentioned above, the participants are typically a mixture of early-career and senior leading scientists, including a significant contingent from developing countries. In 2019, we plan to further increase the interdisciplinary nature of the workshop and bring experts working on topics that are very relevant to electronic structure but who don't often interact. The participant list will be finalized in early 2018. In lieu of a participant list later in this form, we simply list the organizers. The participant and speaker list from the 2017 edition appears at this website http://indico.ictp.it/event/7948.
