Greening AI with Software Engineering
Location: CECAM-HQ EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland
Organisers
Key Topics to be Covered:
- Adjusting the Software lifecycle to include Green AI. This topic delves into the integration of Green AI principles within the entire software development life cycle. It addresses the need for a holistic approach, emphasizing the importance of incorporating eco-friendly considerations not only in the coding phase but also during design, testing, deployment, and maintenance. By aligning the software development life cycle with sustainable practices, we can ensure that the entire process contributes to environmental conservation.
- Carbon-Aware AI/Software Development. Raise awareness regarding current best practices among developers about the environmental impact of software and guide them in crafting code with minimized carbon footprints. This involves optimizing algorithms, selecting energy-efficient platforms, and considering the environmental implications throughout the software development life cycle.
- Education of Green AI/Software. We want to discuss how the computer science curriculums need to be adjusted in order to make the next generation of tech professionals aware of energy efficiency development practices. We also want to use this workshop as an opportunity to create a hub to share educational content that can help teach Sustainable Software Engineering worldwide.
- Strengthening Social Impact of Sustainable Tech. By inviting researchers from social science disciplines to the workshop, we aim to spark a meaningful interdisciplinary discussion on extending the influence of our current research beyond academic realms, actively engaging with social communities and the general public. The goal is to provide accessible tools for informed decision-making regarding interactions with carbon-intensive software applications. Through the discourse, we seek to explore innovative ways of improving the communication and dissemination of our findings, fostering a collective effort to make impactful strides towards a more sustainable, environmentally conscious, and cost-efficient digital future.
Format and Structure:
The workshop will consist of 1 or 2 thought-provoking talks per day, followed by panel discussions, hands-on sessions, and collaborative working groups. Emphasis will be placed on fostering active participation and facilitating meaningful dialogue among participants.
Expected Impact:
This workshop aims to catalyze the development of an interdisciplinary community dedicated to advancing green software and AI research. It will not only contribute to academic knowledge but also provide actionable insights for industry professionals to implement sustainable practices in their respective domains.
We anticipate that this workshop will be a seed for the research community to shape the research agenda in Green AI and promote collaboration with leading organizations, industry partners, and environmental advocacy groups to challenge the frontiers of our research. This CECAM-Lorentz workshop “Greening AI with Software Engineering” is timely and aligns with the pressing need for sustainable technological development. Our diverse, multidisciplinary and highly knowledgeable team is committed to organizing a high-quality event that fosters collaboration and drives positive change.
