Hermes 2012
Location: Cumberland Lodge, The Great Park, Windsor, Berkshire, United Kingdom
Organisers
Hermes 2012 is a Summer School made for and by research students. It is an event targeted towards enhancing fluency in multiscale modelling techniques and strengthening science communication skills, whilst at the same time building an international network of young researchers who will soon address global challenges which can only be accomplished through multidisciplinary collaboration.
The schedule of the Hermes 2012 Summer School is divided into two equal parts. The first half of the weekend will involve four master classes with world experts in their respective areas of materials modelling. The classes will be approximately 50 minutes in length, followed by breakout sessions over coffee, after which the guest speakers will conduct a question and answer session. The speakers will be available for the duration of the Summer School for discussions and questions.
Participants are not required to have experience in any of the modelling techniques that will be presented at Hermes 2012.
The second half of the weekend will focus on learning how to communicate the science to various audience types, from young people, to the general public, to politicians. There will be two science communication master classes, one led by Gareth Mitchell from BBC Click. The participants will then breakout into small groups and develop videos on their chosen master class topic. The goal of the science communication classes will be to enable participants to go away with the confidence to communicate science to all audience types, an invaluable skill for anyone, whether within research, industry or the corporate world. Throughout the weekend there will be various other activities, including walks through Windsor Great Park, wine tasting sessions, poster sessions and a barbecue.
