International Guest Student Programme on Scientific Computing
Location: Forschungszentrum Juelich, Jülich Supercomputing Centre

Short description:
CECAM-DE-Juelich offers to a number of international students a stay for about 10 weeks at Juelich Supercomputing Centre to work with research groups on CECAM related topics combined with High Performance Computing. Introductory courses to HPC are provided. Results are presented as an extended final report together with a colloquium, where students present their work during a public talk.
Scope:
The field of scientific computing is certainly one which becomes more and more important in the educational plan of universities. In practice this involves teaching of numerical methods, the implementation of algorithms and some programming practice. In order to work on nowadays computational challenges and to compete with other
groups on an international level, students should also learn about parallel programming in an early stage of their career, i.e. before entering master or PhD level. Learning about the possibilities and capabilities of parallel computing in this stage provides a wide
perspective to students and opens interesting paths to choose the way in their scientific career. Therefore it is necessary to teach students not only theoretically on parallel computing but to provide access to high performance computing architectures and to give them the possibility to practice. This also leads to young academics who will be well prepared for a thesis in compute intense fields.
Objective:
The International Guest Student Programme on Scientific Computing (IGSP-SC) intends to offer young students (usually on the master level) the possibility to learn and practice concepts from parallel computing. They are integrated into scientific groups and supervised by experienced researchers from different scientific fields, covering e.g. soft matter, plasma physics, statistical physics, biophysics, computational fluid dynamics, materials science. All research groups, involved in the programme have a solid background in scientific computing and long lasting experience in parallel programming.
The programme starts with an introductory course about basic techniques of parallel computing as well as using Juelich supercomputers (JUQUEEN - IBM Blue Gene/Q, JUROPA - Bull/Nehalem cluster, JUDGE - Nvidia GPGPU cluster). The course consists of lectures and practical hands-on sessions. Each student is then assigned to a scientific core group where he is working on a project within the context of ongoing research interests of this group. In the ideal case, the student already mentions in
his application in which group he would like to work. During the programme the student is then supervised by a researcher. In the end of the programme a 2-day seminar is organized where the students give a presentation of about 30 minutes each about their conducted work during their stay in Juelich. In addition each student prepares a final report (~10 pages each) which is published as techincal report [1-5].
For the duration of the programme, the students will be employed as student assistants (19 hours/week). The participants are expected to be resident in Juelich for the entire period. Forschungszentrum Juelich will provide assistance in finding accomodation in Juelich.
Topics:
Possible directions of work during the programme include:
- Modeling and simulation in physics, chemistry and biophysics
- Techniques of parallel molecular dynamics or other particle methods (e.g. SPH,DPD,MPC)
- Efficient methods and parallelization of long range interactions
- Parallel simulation of mesoscopic solvent models
- Parallel algorithms and load-balancing
- Parallel quantum chemistry and structural mechanics
- Performance analysis of parallel algorithms
- Mathematical modelling and statistics
- Programming of hierarchical parallel computer systems
