MatOSC: shaping together a future EOSC node for Materials
Location: CECAM-HQ-EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland
Organisers
MatOSC is a project to prepare a future thematic node for Materials in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). This open event aims to gather prospective providers and users of such a node, to collect needs, identify offerings and discuss possible use cases.
MatOSC (https://eosc.eu/horizon-europe-projects/matosc) is one of the running (May-October 2026) cascading projects selected by EOSC-Gravity to create national and thematic nodes for the EOSC Federation. It is coordinated by UKRI, and its board includes representatives from key initiatives and data infrastructures across Europe, namely MaterialsCloud (https://www.materialscloud.org/), FAIRmat (http://www.fairmat-nfdi.eu/), DIADEM (https://www.pepr-diadem.fr/), PSDI (https://www.psdi.ac.uk/), and it leverages the community engagement of CECAM.
MatOSC aims to act as the EOSC thematic entry point for materials science, turning today’s fragmented landscape of discipline-, technique-, and country-specific materials data initiatives into a coherent, discoverable, and reusable European system of systems. Building on the fact that data reuse is now central to materials research, MatOSC will enable researchers to find, access, and combine heterogeneous experimental and computational assets (datasets, workflows, analysis tools, and reference information) across subdomains, and to assemble them into reusable, citable collections aligned with FAIR practices.
Who should participate and why:
● Potential MatOSC providers (of data, software and other resources), to make offerings and discuss their potential impact
● Prospective users, to shape and prioritize MatOSC functionalities
The event goals include:
● Share understanding of an EOSC Node requirements
● Create a list of possible MatOSC functionalities
● Create a list of potential initial MatOSC contributors
● Create a shortlist of possible use cases involving MatOSC
● Discuss next steps towards MatOSC
