DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE

MolSim2012 is a 2-week school in the field of molecular simulation covering basic and advanced Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics techniques. The course integrates lectures and hands-on exercises and targets starting PhD students in the field, but also Postdoc and other researchers can attend. The school will be organized in Amsterdam with both local and guest lecturers. It will run from Monday January 9, 2012 to Friday January 20, 2012.

The idea is to give an understanding of principles underlying these techniques and to use this understanding to optimize a simulation code. The more advanced topics include molecular simulations in the various ensembles (NVE, NVT, NPT, grand canonical, etc), free energy computations, phase equilibria, rare events, configurational-bias Monte Carlo. The morning sessions are lectures introducing the methods and in the afternoons there are computer exercises in which these methods are applied. The course does not assume any previous knowledge in molecular simulations. However, elementary knowledge in thermodynamics and statistical thermodynamics is assumed.

Lecturers include Daan Frenkel, Berend Smit,  Bernd Ensing, and Evert Jan Meijer.

•  Excercisebook.

The participation fee is 700 Euro. This includes housing and lunch, coffee/tea during the day and during weekdays dinner will be provided for. Participants are expected to organize the evening meals themselves in the weekend. No financial support is offered this year.
