n spite of more than a century of active research, Hydrodynamic Turbulence has not yet unveiled all of its mysteries. The difficulty is related to the strong non-linearity and non-locality of the Navier-Stokes equations, which are responsible for a rich and complex multi-scale physics, coupling the dynamics of the fluid over a broad range of scales, from large scales at which energy is injected down to small scales at which it is dissipated by molecular viscosity.
The thematic school "New Challenges in Turbulence Research IV" aims at training young researchers (PhDs, postdocs and permanent) to the latest developments of comprehensive approaches for the theoretical, numerical and experimental study of hydrodynamic turbulence. We seek to integrate different approaches and to gather together leading scientists from different communities, from very fundamental aspects to practical societal challenges such as energy and environment.
The school will be articulated around 4 main axis :
- Advances in theory, modeling and simulations of turbulence : multi-scale energy transfer and decay, rotating and anisotropic turbulence, spatio-temporal structure of turbulence, data assimilation methods.
- Big challenges in experimental turbulence research : numerical wind tunnels, cryogenic and quantum turbulence, high Reynolds number experiments, Lagrangian methods in extreme experiments.
- Turbulent transport of particles and fields : simulations of fully resolved particles, atmospheric transport of particles, hybrid algorithms for simulations of turbulent mixing with finite molecular diffusivity, statistical models for turbulent mixing, fragmentation and atomization, thermal effects of particle laden turbulent flows.
- Turbulence and energy : the role of turbulence in wind turbines energy production, supersonic turbulence, high fidelity schemes for simulations of turbulent combustion, large eddy simulations for environmental flows and wind turbines energy.
